Father’s Day is around the corner, and if you are still wondering what to gift your dad this year, fret no more! MetroMela will not just tell you what to pick up, but also which stores in Cochin to pick it up from…

Garments — Apparels are a good (and easy) choice. So, if you are cash-happy and in a mood to splurge, then head to the likes of Zodiac or Louis Philippe on M.G. Road. Want to be spoilt for choice? Nothing like going straight to Jayalakshmi, Seematti (M.G. Road), Kalyan Silks or Joy Alukkas Wedding Centre to choose from a hundred brands! Go for comfy shirts in soft cotton or linen or better still, wrinkle-free shirts that are ideal for Kerala’s weather. Wrinkle-free trousers are also a great pick to last dad all day long. Remember to pick up a style he likes - flat front and pleated.

If he prefers getting his clothes customized, The Raymond Shop is ‘the’ place. Feeling richer? Go for Reid & Taylor. But make sure you have the right measurements before you customize.

For those of you who can’t indulge, try Reliance Trends (Oberon Mall) instead. There are numerous brands that are much cheaper, and you can find T-shirts, shirts and pants starting around Rs. 200. If your dad loves casual clothing like jeans, shorts or track pants, you’ll find plenty of them here too.

Go traditional and gift your dad a mundu with an elegant border. Pick it up from KaralKada (M.G. Road), Kasavukada, Hantex (Canon Shed Road) or Ramachandran Handlooms (Church Landing Road). You can even match the mundu with a lovely cotton or silk kurta from Fabindia.

Electronic goods — The love for electronic goods isn’t restricted to just the youth. Some dads simply dig them! So, hunt for digital cameras, mobile phones, music players etc. to make your dad’s day.

To pick up digital cameras, camcorders, cool camera accessories, and other photographic equipment, head to Pixetra. You can also find similar goodies at the Cam Shop (M.G. Road and Marine Drive) or Sony World.

To buy mobile phones and accessories, Marine Drive is a great location. Both at Menaka Complex and GCDA Shopping Complex, you will find a number of mobile phone dealers. We suggest you stick to authorized dealers to avoid getting tricked into buying substandard stuff on apparently “cheaper” prices. It’s a gift, remember, and you want it to last as long as possible. Try The Mobile Store, Univercell, Alif Communications, authorized Nokia dealers, etc.

If your dad loves listening to music on the go, buy him a music player. You will find good music player brands at Reliance TimeOut, White Planet (M.G. Road and By-Pass Junction) and Menaka Complex.

Accessories — Leather wallets (office bags too) make great Father’s Day gifts. Pick up really cool leather goodies from Hidesign, Witco (M.G. Road), or Parke Leather. You can even look at leather eyeglasses pouch, mobile phone holders, belts, folders, planners and the like.

Check out footwear, either casual or formal, from Reliance Footprint, Doc & Mark, Bata, Woodlands (M.G. Road and Oberon Mall) and Metro. These may cost you well over Rs. 2,000.

For watches, head to exclusive Titan, Timex or Citizen showrooms or go to multi-brand outlets such as Swiss Time House or Reliance TimeOut. Multi-brand stores allow you to select from both Indian and international brands of time wear.

If your father has a liking for fragrances, gift him perfumes or eau de colognes. If you can’t afford these, even an exotic deodorant will work well. Check out Reliance TimeOut, Goodwill Collections or Archies Gallery, or even the exclusive fragrances outlets at Bay Pride Mall and Oberon Mall. You can also pick up rejuvenating shower gels if your dad loves trying new things.

This & That — Occasionally it’s more fun gifting your dad something different. Does your dad love reading? What about a book he’s always wanted to own or the latest from his favorite author? Find the right book at Reliance TimeOut, Current Books, Paico or D.C.Books.

If music or movies get your father in a good mood, head to Planet M or Music World or even Reliance TimeOut to dig out his favorites (we are guessing it would be Classics).

Does he play a sport? Get him a new racquet, bat, or any other sports good that he may need. You will find good quality sports equipment at Kerala Sports Industries, Hattrick or Track Sports (Chittoor Road).

You can also pick up Father’s Day special photo frames, coffee mugs, greeting cards and the like from Archies Gallery or Hallmark. You can get customized gifts like tees or mugs from Oberon Mall. Of course, popular gifts like stationery, cufflinks, ties etc. are always welcome if your dad works in the corporate world.

If nothing works out for you, take your dad out for a cup of coffee or perhaps a meal; just the two of you. Spend a couple of hours with him and watch his day and his year ahead, turn special. Most importantly, don’t forget to tell him how much you love him.
