Jayalakshmi, for silks and more | Cochin

What you see – Open since the 1950s, Jayalakshmi Silks is one of the oldest stores in the state. Located near Shenoys Theatre, it has a mock lawn in front that leads to five floors of air-conditioned shopping space.

What you get – As its name implies, Jayalakshmi Silks is a garments store. It has a wide range of readymade apparel and fabric for men, women and children.

The women’s section has churidar, ghaghras, lachaas, silk and designer sarees. The cotton and cotton blended churidar sets created by the store’s own weavers offer good quality and value for your money (at an average price of Rs. 600). Heavier sets with embroidery and other detailing cost more.

What makes Jayalakshmi Silks popular is their wide range of silk sarees. Varieties of silks, from plain sarees to those with embroidery and elaborate borders find place on their shelves. Cottons, chiffons and sarees made from other materials are available too. Jayalakshmi Silks has a sizeable wedding collection as well.

In the men’s section, you will find shirts, trousers, cargos, three-fourths and T-shirts. Well-known brands of shirts like Peter England, John Players and Pan America are available with prices starting at Rs. 580. Pure cotton and linen T-shirts (round necks and collars) from Crocodile, Lee and other major brands are worth a look as well. If you are looking for fabric, you can choose from brands like Raymond’s and Vimal.

At Jayalakshmi, you can also buy clothes for kids. Head for the third floor to pick up ghaghra cholis, salwar kurtas, churidars, capris, skirts, cargos and jackets for girls and trousers, jeans, cargos, shirts and T-shirts for boys.

Our verdict – Jayalakshmi Silks is one of the biggest and most popular stores in Cochin.  What makes Jayalakshmi Silks unique is their customer service. They have more than 100 staff members to meet the different needs of their patrons. We liked the display of clothes in each section according to their price. They also have four trial rooms in each section. The parking lot here can accommodate 30 cars at a time.
